THE CHALLENGE

Walmart, always obsessive about innovating to meet customer wants and needs, asked Miller Zell to collaborate on executing a store of the future and then to take the lead scaling it nationwide. Walmart wanted to rebrand its interior signing package and displays, and it wanted to lean into its digital footprint, creating an environment where customers could use the Walmart app to optimize their experience.  

THE SOLUTION

The “Swipe up” program started with a store near Walmart’s headquarters. The exterior and interior look was transformed by new signage, fixtures and displays. Wayfinding and aisle markers were upgraded and nomenclature aligned with the app. Miller Zell took charge of engineering, procuring, testing and installing the entire interior signing program, completing its work in three months in advance of executive walkthroughs.

THE RESULT

Miller Zell value-engineered and adapted the store of the future design to be rolled out to 75 stores in three months. Walmart was so happy with those results that the plan for 2021 is to scale the new brand signing package for 800 stores nationwide. The interior is user-friendly, employing a modular system that is easy to navigate, with wayfinding aligning seamlessly with the app.
